Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) was founded in 1984 as the Vellore Engineering College by Dr. G. Viswanathan under the self-financing scheme. Conferred Deemed-to-be University status by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Ministry of Education) and UGC under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 in 2001, the institution has grown into one of India's premier multi-disciplinary universities. In 2019, the Government of India recognized VIT as an Institution of Eminence (IoE). The university operates across 16 specialized academic schools encompassing engineering, computer science, management, law, architecture, biosciences, agriculture, and humanities. VIT is widely known for pioneering the Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS), which grants students the academic autonomy to choose courses, professors, and scheduling. It also maintains significant research infrastructure, housing 13 interdisciplinary research centres and maintaining extensive international credit-transfer and student-exchange partnerships worldwide.
