Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (SIST) was established in 1987 as Sathyabama Engineering College by industrialist and educationalist Dr. Jeppiaar. It was conferred the status of Deemed-to-be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, in 2001 and has been categorized as a Category-I University by the University Grants Commission (UGC). SIST offers multidisciplinary undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across engineering, technology, dental sciences, pharmacy, nursing, law, management, architecture, and basic sciences. Notable for its research infrastructure, the university houses dedicated centres of excellence and achieved a landmark milestone on 22 June 2016 with the launch of its student-engineered satellite 'SATHYABAMASAT' in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
